Film Background While on assignment in Juarez, Mexico in 1997 as a field producer for Fox TV and freelance reporter with Telemundo, Lorena Mendez-Quiroga witnessed a protest by mothers of slain girls at the Justice Dept. Since that moment, Mendez-Quiroga has taken up the cause of getting justice for the women of Juarez. That journey has included capturing 2000 hours of footage, starting an activist movement and ultimately the making of this documentary film.
The Mothers The mothers of the murdered young girls have suffered the tremendous injustice of having their loved ones killed and then have the crimes go unpunished. They have started several movements and have protested relentlessly against police incompetence, indifference and corruption. Their struggle continues to this day.
Diana Washington Valdez A newspaper reporter who works for the El Paso Times, Washington-Valdez has been following the story since its inception and has conducted the most thorough investigation to date. She has captured her investigation in her book, Harvest of Women and also in Cosechas de Mujeres, the spanish version. She has been relentless in getting to the bottom of the story as she saw that the justice system could not be counted on to do a thorough investigation.
Amnesty International Ammesty International has also taken up the cause of raising awareness to the injustices against women in Juarez, Mexico. Led by Bonnie Abaunza, Director of Artists for Amnesty, AI has mobilized movements throughout the world and influenced both American and Mexican governments to action.
